Many are questioning the point of Twitter. Perhaps the best question to ask is, how can this assist us in the church? I have just set up a Twitter account called, 'Anglican Church' and invite you if you are on Twitter to make a connection. See: http://twitter.com/AnglicanChurch

And hopefully together we can answer that pertinent question!

God bless,

Rev Mark

Yeah using Twitter for announcements, generally to our younger members, with feed embedded into our web page. Get occasional random followers, usually local Christians from other denoms, etc. Follow @wrachurch

It seems to me that twitter can be used in a number of different contexts to greater or lesser effect.
I've seen it used to great effect when there is a hashtag for a particular conference, or even better, a specific session of a conference or other event. People twitter discussions, questions, and general notes as the event goes on. If the event has a large screen available to display that hashtag's feed, it's even more interesting, and a great tool for the presenters - they can get instant feedback as to how their audience is responding, get questions and topics, and so forth.

Now, on the other hand, it's limited by two factors - one, the relative shortness of the messages, which leads to longer content being linked, reducing the immediacy, and secondly, a matter of scale - at a big event, like SxSW interactive, the twitter feed was updating on the order of many times per second, far more than anyone could reasonably expect to follow.

I think that twitter has it's uses - announcing events, publicity, soliciting questions and comments. But past that, it's probably a bit limited to use for much else. Although we shouldn't ever discount the feeling of community it brings to some people - a way of staying connected to others. That's a very good thing, and one that I think could be used to bring emergent communities together more.

We just twittered the Good Friday Passion --over 500 people followed it, and it was picked up as a news story by a lot of new outlets for its' novelty.

I tried Twitter and left it for its sheer banality, but note that it can be used as a sort of Media Press Release using it's ability to link to other sites. As far as I can see, that's how the best out there are using it.
