A request for emerging church resources

I am currently writing a paper on the emerging church for an ecclesiology class at Catholic University. (Yes, my topic definitely did not match with the others.)

The initial inspiration for the topic came from reading Wikinomics and noticing certain similar themes, such as decentralized networks, bottom-up organization, "prosumer" approaches, etc.

In addition to those technological/informational/cultural aspects, I'm also interested in questions of how emerging… Continue

Praying for and Praying with General Convention

As Tim alluded to in his great blogdown of the Y'all Come in San Francisco, a group of us are going to General Convention this summer with the express purpose of doing something that can seem bizarre and out of place in the craziness of legislative sessions, the exhibit hall, and church politics: We're going there to pray. For those of you who have never gone to General Convention, it can be a rather high-stress environment, especially around high-profile resolutions and any number of… Continue

Developing a new Anglimergent network in Australia & New Zealand

In the last three weeks I have had the privilege of speaking and leading training events in Melbourne, Newcastle, Grafton and Sydney. In all these events, I was excited by what was the beginning of a growing network of Anglican Christians who seeking to reimagine Church of the 21st Century. In these sessions, Catholic Anglicans & open evangelicals got together to explore mission and new ways of being church in the context of a culture that is increasingly focused on new forms of spiritual… Continue

Blogdown: Anglimergent Episcopal Church 'Y'All Come' in San Francisco - hoping to start an online conversation...

Hi All,

I'm just back from a 'Y'all Come' gathering of the Episcopal Church (TEC) Anglimergent contingent in San Francisco, having completed an obligatory Facebook/email check and nap. While I was there I volunteered to write a blog (read unofficial, subjective, incomplete, etc.) report on the event so, coffee in hand, here goes for your edification, conversation and correction. More detailed minutes/attendance will be posted later, and you can probably find the Twitter feed that… Continue

Church fit to relate with a post-christian context

Last Sunday Ian Mobsby of the Moot Community and Pete Pilliinger from Fresh Expressions in the UK contributed to a National Radio Broadcast on Australia's ABC Station exploring the needs and challenges of all churches in post industrial nations facing a post-secular post-christendom context. To listen to it in .mp3 version click here

Possibly Anglimergent Campus Minstry at the University of California Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has held a certain fascination for me ever since watching The Lost Boys as a teenager... sounds like they would be open to someone who's Anglimergent!

UCCM is looking for a dynamic campus minister to lead our thriving, progressive campus ministry at UCSC. Imagine serving Christ in the midst of towering redwood trees overlooking the beautiful Monterey Bay! Ideal for surfers! United Campus Christian Ministries (UCCM) at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) is a… Continue

Anglimergent Gathering This Weekend

Anglimergent in the United States came from seeds of hope that were planted in the hearts and minds of Phyllis Tickle, Karen Ward, Howard Anderson, Devon Anderson, and myself. These seeds were nurtured by the writings and appearances of Brian McLaren, Doug Pagitt, Tony Jones, and a whole host of emergent and not-so-emergent types.

In February 2008, Anglimergent took on organizational life as interested individuals were called together in Minneapolis for a two day conversation about… Continue

Anyone making sense of the rite of Confirmation these days?

Hi all,

Listen, I'm just wanting to check around and see what people are doing with Confirmation these days... that proverbial rite in search of a theology. In my own context - www.stbenedictstable.ca - we practice open table, but do put real emphasis on baptism. I could rehearse some of what informs that; I've done so in a little book we've published on this topic. I'm going to assume that many of you have also come to a place of seeing participation in communion as being, at least for… Continue

More flowers for the hair of those coming to San Francisco

And what flower is prettier than the reminder lilly?

A number of you have been in touch with either me or Sara miles about the meeting next week in San Francisco. I understand however, that plans change over time! To that end, if you haven't, please send me your arrival and departure times, and whether or not you will have your own transportation.

We have housing set aside, so if you haven't arranged your own housing, but rather were told there would be housing available,… Continue

Pilgrimage

This is the first time in several years that I haven't spent March preparing to leave for El Salvador, to be a pilgrim on the road to the tomb of Archbishop Oscar Romero. I've been thinking a great deal about pilgrimage lately. As part of a course this January we had to write up a "Rule of Life." We had to describe the faith practices that give meaning and shape to our life. I included a section on pilgrimage.

Regular Pilgrimage

In addition to weekly worship, it is important for… Continue

What is Anglimergent?

Identity is probably THE topic for discussion at the upcoming Anglimergent meeting in March.

What is Anglimergent? Who is Anglimergent? Are we really Anglican and Emergent? What are we doing? What do we want?

As with many things postmodern, what Anglimergent even is can be tough to define - and I'm betting each one of us would describe it a bit differently (if not radically differently).

So, what is your understanding of the Anglimergent identity? What is… Continue

Ash Wednesday in the Street

On Ash Wednesday, a group of people from the South of Market Episcopal churches in San Francisco went to the Mission (a very busy, poor, mostly Latino neighborhood) to offer ashes at subway stops and on the streets. We served about 250 people in the morning and 300 in the evening. Here is a letter from Deb Tullman, one of the thurifers, and my notes from the evening service...if anyone else in the Diocese has photos, please post to this site. It was an incredible day.

from Deb… Continue
