Barbarians at the Gate, or Reflections on my Peers in the Diocese of Olympia

Last night in front of a urinal at a pub, I had a moment to reflect upon a question, posed by a friend, about the trends I've noticed while working for our Diocesan Commission for Emerging Mission, traveling around and talking to young Episcopalians. Here's what I've noticed. I'm guessing this is loosely reflective of the national situation:

1) In our church, there is a group of young 20/30-something lifers - cradle Episcopalians - who really grasp the 'pearl of great price' that is… Continue

An emerging Diocese in Western Washington

I think that the Diocese of Olympia is doing something unique in TEC, which is establishing a Commission and employing someone (me) to organize and galvanize Diocesan Anglimergents.

Please use our sites as a resource:

If You're Coming to San Francisco....

...be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

And please, if you're coming to the Anglimergent meeting in San Francisco March 15-17, let us know, so we can welcome you.

Send your arrival/departure times, and let us know if you need a ride from the airport. Send your housing needs if you have any, and even if you live here, let us know, so we can make plans to feed you properly.

Standing on your Head for Lent.

Sometimes Jesus doesn’t make a lot of sense. In today’s Gospel reading he exhorts his followers to fast, but also tells them not to make a big deal of it. Though the Old Testament reading from Joel tells us to “Blow the Trumpet. Sanctify a fast.” Jesus says specifically, “Do not blow a trumpet.” Confusing.

I grew up thinking of Lent kind of like a Christian version of New Year’s resolutions. It was a time to start a diet, give up caffeine or chocolate, stop smoking or swearing, or doing… Continue

Taking the Lent out of Lent.....

Lent is a play on words in spanish which means "slow" from Lento..... the correct word in spanish is Cuaresma which means 40 days. Also there is a saying in spanish "tan lento como la Cuaresma....as slow as Lent..." meaning that Lent is a boring time, that it is long and drawn out, it has no real flavor to it except the wonderful Mexican food which is cooked on fridays for "vigilia" (meatless days). But even in Mexico chicken has been added to the foods which can be eaten on fast days! I love… Continue

the many faces of dr. christ

He has been meek and mild, stroking a lamb with soft doe eyes.

He has been uproariously laughing, as if someone told a bawdy joke.

He has been a knock-out king, going 12 rounds with the devil.

He has been an apocalyptic prophet warning of gloom and doom -- and triumph -- that never quite materialized.

He has been a zealot, leading a popular religious and social movement against Rome and the hellenized Temple.

He has been a revolutionary, a… Continue
