Two sides of the Border....

I had two special experiences this week that I thought I would share for discussion.  One was driving to Tijuana to celebrate a home funeral mass "MIsa de cuerpo presente", for a family from San Clemente CA who live in Tijuana for their father.  The other was trying to find an Episcopal Church where one of my Mexican Parishioners could go to a spanish eucharist in LA while she was visiting her family.  My experience in Tijuana was an eye opener after having lived fifteen years in Mexico City. …See More

What do you see as some of the biggest challenges facing Anglicans today?
real Inclusion, tolerance, patience with the "other",
getting back to basics mission and ministry and message of the Gospel. (doing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy)
the need to renew the "episcopacy" more in accord with the Gospel/primitive church principals. (enough of miters and crosiers, miters to inflate egos and crosiers to beat over the heads of their subjects because the have the title The Most Reverend). What about the yoke of humility and gentleness?
What do you see as some of the biggest opportunities for Anglicans today?
That we practice what we preach. That we do the work the Gospel invites us and demands us to do.
That we worry more about people and less about doctrine and morals and keeping the institution afloat.
What do you want Anglimergent to be? and what other Anglimergent resources, gatherings, activities or events would you find helpful for your ministry?
A system of support with other Anglicans who have been in ministry lay or ordained (me for 19 years) and feel that we are really getting it wrong. Our spirituality, our sacramentality, our ministry and mission has been interrupted by debates, doctrinal discussions, moralising, and name calling. When I started with all this I thought it was about Love of God and Love of Neighbor? Wasn't it?

Now that the Spirit has come...and gone?

I sit here on Pentecost evening....tired.....similar to the Holy Week-Easter tired. Our U2charist Pentecost Vigil is over, The Bishop has made his visitation and confirmed his candidates and is gone home, the congregation ate its cake from 12 different plates representing each month for the Churches birthday. These are liturgical highs for me....but then comes the liturgical downs.....I am a bit tired, wondering if we had a decent attendance or not, did it go well for us, was there enough… Continue

For those concerned about Swine Flu Virus in Mexico (Rector of Christ Church Mexico)

Dear Friends,

I am the Rector of Christ Church Parish in Mexico. We visit every Monday the General Hospital taking sandwiches and coffee to the families in the emeregency waiting room and I bring the sacraments to the sick and the dying. Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit patients who are infected with the Swine Virus. According to the statistics that I recieved the cases reported and given by the media are quite accurate. At this hospital there have been some deaths (less than 10)… Continue

Taking the Lent out of Lent.....

Lent is a play on words in spanish which means "slow" from Lento..... the correct word in spanish is Cuaresma which means 40 days. Also there is a saying in spanish "tan lento como la Cuaresma....as slow as Lent..." meaning that Lent is a boring time, that it is long and drawn out, it has no real flavor to it except the wonderful Mexican food which is cooked on fridays for "vigilia" (meatless days). But even in Mexico chicken has been added to the foods which can be eaten on fast days! I love… Continue

Getting back to Spirituality

The new year brings with it the many challenges of returning to one's original purpose and mission....

somewhat like Jesus when he is Baptized and understands more clearly his mission and ministry.

It seems that modern spirituality needs many options in terms of finding creative and new ways

of communicating with the Spirit. I have taken a bit the example of Phylis Tickle in praying more than once a day, three times if possible, morning, midday and early evening. I have… Continue

Keep our Community in mind in Mexico as we celebrate "Dia de los Muertos"

This weekend many Mexicans will be celebrating all Souls (Dia de los Muertos) to honor and cherish their loved ones. Christ Church Parish in Mexico City will be celebrating our third U2/MIsa to commemorate the heroes of the last century who have struggled for peace, justice, inclusion, and tolerance in our world. I feel we need more prophetic voices both outside and inside the church. Do any of your commuities celebrate "Dia de Los Muertos" with… Continue

Ariel, I think that many of us traditionally look to Lambeth for guidance and dirrection from our Bishops on moral, liturgical, social, and church related issues. Recent history has shown that they have not been enough of one mind to be very clear about any of those issues. IT seems that this last conference was about prayer, listening, study, sharing, ecumenical dialogue, and openess to change and vision together. That changes alot how the bishops work together and perhaps even shows us a new way of doing work together in our communities and a new way to resolve our own infighing and conflicts by going back to our human, spiritual, and respectful ways of working with each other. As to Latin America.... I belive that the recent attitude of the Bishops especially taking into account the Ecumenical nature of Lameth have shown us that we need to be engaged not only on Anglican lines but also with other Christians. Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox as we walk forward. No longer can we just work alone. That is a great lesson to learn! Thanks!

2) What benefit can we discover how Latin American?

Dear Friends, Thank you for sharing your ideas. I have to add that yesterday in Clerikus we had a discussion with our Bishop and Primate Carlos about his impressions of Lambeth. I believe I have a better sense of it's results after his discussion with us. Lambeth seemed to have been for the Bishops....a retreat, a time to get to know each other, a time to pray and share and reflect. Perhaps that is why so little has been heard. It also seems that his estimation of Archbishop Rowan has trully increased and he was very pleased with his simplicity, his spirituality, his leadership and his focus. Sadly, those who see Lambeth as a jurisdicitional entity like Synods certainly go away unhappy. But as a consultative group learning to be with each other as leaders in the church, perhaps this is a new model of doing church? Prayer, discussion, bible study, making real human contact even with the person who is not in your camp politically is a new way of doing church. There was sadness from our Bishop about the role that Gene Robinson played in the conference. HIs comment was Gene Robinson is not about sexuality, he is about honesty and the fact that the church has been hipocritical about it's homosexual bishops (there have been plenty and are plenty with partners who did enter those gates at Lambeth). There is still work to be done. Vincent
