It's good to be in touch again! Someone told me Ross Cuthbertson had died -- I'm glad to hear he hasn't. John de Gruchy wrote a book on the charismatic renewal 25 years ago, which was uppressed and never published,. He's now agreed that I should e…

Hey Stephen. You cannot say that youare not emergent. Your research deals squarely with 21st Century emergent conversation. Ross Cuthbertson is now emergent. A talk with him might help. He is not 21st Century technological.though. Communication with…

Andrew Jones is the master historian on all things emergent - I know he has talked about the history of the charismatic movement outside of the US before http://tallskinnykiwi.typepad.com/tallskinnykiwi/

What I'm doing here

I'm not Anglican, I'm Orthodox, so I'd better explain what I'm doing here.

I'm trying to do some historical research into the effects of the charismatic renewal movement on southern African Christianity. If you are interested you can rerad more about it in Notes from underground: Research: charismatic renewal movement in South Africa and also in this article on A conspiracy of silence in South African Church history. I was just wondering if any southern African refugees from the charismatic movement had ended up in the Anglimergent camp, and if any might be willing to talk about it.

As I noted in the second article referred to above
In 1973 Godfrey Ashby, also an academic, but from a different school of thought than the “English-speaking churches” school, said that there were three forces shaping the life of the Anglican Church in the Eastern Cape at that time: group dynamics, challenge groups and the charismatic renewal. movement. Many people seemed to back one of those and scorn the others, but he said they needed all of them. He said all three were affecting the churches, and that there were some Anglo-Catholics who were alienated from the charismatic movement, and some Evangelicals (mainly non-Anglican) who were pietist, and alienated from the challenge group thing, but generally all three were causing a real turmoil and revival in the church.
Godfrey Ashby was a biblical scholar rather than a church historian, and later became a bishop, but his comment leaves a lot of unanswered questions, and I'm hoping I might find some people who can help me answer them.

Anglican charismatic renewal and emerging church

I'm doing research into the charismatic renewal movement and its effect on South African Christianity. The movement peaked in the 1970s and 1980s and has been declining since then, and I'm wondering if any of the people involved in it have found their way into the emerging church movement.

My interest is not exclusively among Anglicans, though I have found Anglicans the most forthcoming and willing to help.
