Forty years ago this week, the first message was sent over the Internet. 40 years ago, fresh back from Woodstock (40 years ago last month) I didn't know a thing about the Internet and computers were things that took up whole floors at the Franklin...

What do you see as some of the biggest challenges facing Anglicans today?
My academic degree is in Church History and I have become convinced that over the millennia Christians have invested far too much effort, energy, money, resources and time looking for those places where we differ. We have to stop that. Instead we must concentrate on the very great deal more that we have in common, celebrate that and build on that. If all Christians ended this constant bickering and focused on that, we would indeed make disciples of all nations.
What do you see as some of the biggest opportunities for Anglicans today?
Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, providing for those unable to provide for themselves at this moment and equipping them so they can, visiting the prisoners (not only in jail but prisoners of prejudice, injustice, fear, etc) so they cease to despair, making all of the above one of the means of preaching the Good News. Who could withstand or fail to believe in Jesus after that?
What do you want Anglimergent to be? and what other Anglimergent resources, gatherings, activities or events would you find helpful for your ministry?
A place of common ground and not of deviseness. Living the middle way. As for resources: Bible study, prayer support. I offer a few resources of my own:

Sayings of the Desert Christians: Abba Isidore 1

from:http://orthodoxwiki.org/Sayings_of_the_Desert_Fathers#Abba_Isidore

(Abba Isidore) said, 'When I was younger and remained in my cell I set no limit to prayer; the night was for me as much the time of prayer as the day.'

Some thoughts:

This is interesting. When he was younger, Isidore says. He would pray at night and during the day. Did he advocate this? Or is he saying that now that he is older he can't pray like that? Or does he think that in his youth he was carried away?

I know in my… Continue

Chapter 2: What Kind of Person the Abbess Ought to Be
An Abbess who is worthy to be over a monastery
should always remember what she is called,
and live up to the name of Superior.
For she is believed to hold the place of Christ in the monastery,
being called by a name of His,
which is taken from the words of the Apostle:
"You have received a Spirit of adoption ...,
by virtue of which we cry, 'Abba -- Father'" (Rom. 8:15)!

Therefore the Abbess ought not to teach o… Continue

Sayings of the Desert Christians: Abba Isaiah 3

from:http://orthodoxwiki.org/Sayings_of_the_Desert_Fathers#Abba_Isaiah

(Abba Isaiah) also said 'When God wishes to take pity on a soul and it rebels, not bearing anything and doing its own will, he then allows it to suffer that which it does not want, in order that it may seek him again.'

Some thoughts:

God allows us to suffer, which is something we don't want. It's quite true we dislike suffering. OTOH, there are logical consequences to our choices. Some things we suffer through no fault of… Continue

Rule of St. Benedict Reading for Sept 6, 2009 Prologue

January 6, May 7, September 6
Prologue
So we have asked the Lord
who is to dwell in His tent,
and we have heard His commands
to anyone who would dwell there;
it remains for us to fulfill those duties.

Therefore we must prepare our hearts and our bodies
to do battle under the holy obedience of His commands;
and let us ask God
that He be pleased to give us the help of His grace
for anything which our nature finds hardly possible.
And if we want to escape the pains of hell
and attain life everlast… Continue

Rule of St. Benedict Reading for Sept 5, 2009 Prologue

January 5, May 6, September 5
Prologue
Hence the Lord says in the Gospel,
"Whoever listens to these words of Mine and acts upon them,
I will liken to a wise person
who built a house on rock.
The floods came,
the winds blew and beat against that house,
and it did not fall,
because it had been founded on rock" (Matt. 7:24-25).

Having given us these assurances,
the Lord is waiting every day
for us to respond by our deeds to His holy admonitions.
And the days of this life are lengthened
and a truce… Continue
