Ash Wednesday in the Street

On Ash Wednesday, a group of people from the South of Market Episcopal churches in San Francisco went to the Mission (a very busy, poor, mostly Latino neighborhood) to offer ashes at subway stops and on the streets. We served about 250 people in the morning and 300 in the evening. Here is a letter from Deb Tullman, one of the thurifers, and my notes from the evening service...if anyone else in the Diocese has photos, please post to this site. It was an incredible day.

If You're Coming to San Francisco....

...be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

And please, if you're coming to the Anglimergent meeting in San Francisco March 15-17, let us know, so we can welcome you.

Send your arrival/departure times, and let us know if you need a ride from the airport. Send your housing needs if you have any, and even if you live here, let us know, so we can make plans to feed you properly.

If you live in the area and can host someone from out of town, or if you can provide a ride to/from the… Continue

San Francisco Meeting--Draft Agenda

Dear Friends, looking forward to the March meeting. Below is a draft agenda-- please make suggestions for any additions. This is planned as a brief and focused meeting, with specific goals (rather than a general meet-and-hang-out event) so please come ready to work on the agenda. (We'll have time in the evenings to hang out and enjoy each other and San Francisco.) Please post all comments or suggestions to everyone, and please invite others to… Continue

How Church Emerges

This story in the New York Times yesterday about a congregation of faithful Catholics who have kept their church open "illegally" is amazing: it shows how deeply people want church, and desire to make it themselves, by hand. I love the woman at the end who says she doesn't know if she could ever go back.

Emerging Street Churches

Many of us have been talking about the work of Ecclesia Ministries as key to understanding emerging church....here's a great story about the ordination of the newest priest in the nationwide network of street churches.

Hi Sara. I'm interested in the Anglimergent SF get together, particularly since I live in Richmond and am going to the GTU. But I'm primarily a stay-at-home dad of a 17 month old ball of kinetic energy. WIll there be child care or can we come to just part of it? If the latter, any idea what the schedule will be so I can maximize my time, so to speak?

Best,

Morning my friend,

I see you are making the trek to Minnesota in Feb and I am wondering if you have anytime for a meal or coffee or something. It looks like you will be in town on the 23rd and so will I. I figure you may well be booked to the minute or you might want some down time.

let me know.

I am now working 3/4 time at a church in St. Cloud (about an hour NW from where I live. I am there as an interim, (it is a really red-neck part of the world) and I was clear it would be for 6-9 months. I have some other things I need to do but having some cash is not bad and the priest who was there before is a friend who was told he had liver cancer and there is not much they can do. I am going there to love them for a time.

Hope to see you if not here maybe in San Francisco.

Did you go to the meeting in Seattle?

Hey - I am assisting the All Saints' Indian Mission church here in Minneapolis start a feeding program and I wondered if I could chat with you on the phone. I don't know what I'm doing and want to get some wisdom from you and your experience in the feeding world. Would you? Devon

Hey Sara,

I'd mentioned bringing a group to St. Gregory's a while back. Been meaning to mention that it doesn't look like it's going to work with the schedule that we have, unfortunately. Would have been a great experience! Next time I'm in San Fran I guess...

God bless,

Tim

Hi Sara, I would like to go to Macrina Community on Sunday pm (August 3), as a 'Presbymergent' friend of mine will be working there this summer.

I'm looking forward to my little visit at St. Gregory's.
+ I will email you another idea for my time with y'all.
Cheers

Sarah,

I just finished your book (and heard you on NPR) and wanted to give you a great deal of kudos. You are a talented writer with a ministry that is transforming church. I hope we have the chance to cross paths someday, I admire your journey. The potential of being a seminarian with you all at St. Gregory's was one of the hardest parts to say no to when I chose to go somewhere besides CDSP. Thanks for the inspiration!
