I think Tom's advice is excellent, Terry, and it dovetails with the assumption underlying Karen's response: in order to create a worshiping community, whose worship emerges authentically from that community, the first thing you need is: a communit...

I only just saw this thread - it's an important one. Thanks for keeping it fresh, Karen. I, myself, am cynical (Karen, if she reads this, will be shocked - SHOCKED, I say - that I would utter those words) ;-) about both the ecumenical movement, a...

Hear, hear. :-) OK, Sara, I'm with you. It's the kenotic generosity toward institutions that I struggle with, but I'm trying, honestly - though it might not always be apparent. I was certainly grateful for the generosity of my "institutional" TEC...

Tom, this is an *awesome* article. Thanks for posting it - I'm already busy sharing it with friends! It's an excellent description of emergence. The "naming, connecting, nourishing, and illuminating" of emergent efforts described by Wheatley does...

I can't really speak to the specific issue of missioners and needed funds. Also, though I'm an Episcopalian and proud to be one, my primary ministry context is not within the TEC structures, so take me with the appropriate grain of salt for that r...

What you do for fun and re-creation?
"Being/doing church" with my nondenominational church (The Common Table, www.commontable.org), as well as my Episcopal church (Holy Comforter, www.holycomforter.com), reading comic books, hiking.
What do you see as some of the biggest challenges facing Anglicans today?
I think Anglicans in general need to decide what's more important: maintaining control, or blessing and releasing Spirit-filled communities and individuals for the mission of God.
What do you see as some of the biggest opportunities for Anglicans today?
I think the biggest opportunities are in radical grass-roots ecumenical brother/sisterhood: communities and networks of communities of Jesus-followers coming together for mission, outreach, hospitality, art, dreaming, discipleship, fellowship, prayer, the breaking of bread, etc., in flagrant disregard of whether or not their hierarchical authorities consider them to be "in communion" with each other. John 13:34-35, baby.
What do you want Anglimergent to be? and what other Anglimergent resources, gatherings, activities or events would you find helpful for your ministry?
If "Anglimergent" broadens the "emerging church conversation", then it's a good thing. But folks, please don't use it as an excuse to dabble in "emergence" but fail to act like one Body of Christ across denominational lines.

Mike,

I am headed to Holy Comforter next year as your seminarian. I need to come visit Common Table soon. I'd love to talk sometime about both communities. I'm particularly interested in the possibilities of starting an emergent community in my home diocese when I return.

Blessings,
tim

Mike,

I was given your name as someone who might have some specific insight into my thesis topic. Please find some initial conversation here: http://anglimergent.ning.com/forum/topics/research-for-mdiv-thesis

I am looking at use of Anglican Liturgical resources within the emergent community. Though they may use these resources a la carte, I am looking at what it is about these resources that attracts them. Some has suggested that it is the connection to tradition and history. Others suggest that it is the awareness of beauty in the liturgy. I, however, find this phenomenon to be curious when we tend to treat the liturgy like cryptonite when it comes to "youth" and "young adult" ministries.

My basic thesis is that the resonance has something to do with intentional community and early forms and monastic forms of worship.

Any thoughts?

Dean Lawrence

PS- I notice that you are nearby, maybe we can get together and discuss this over coffee.

Hi Mike,

Good to hear from you. The Baltimore Cohort has moved its meetings north into Canton... a little too far out of my orbit. I'm wondering how best to connect with others here in the Columbia / southern Howard County area.

So what are you up to these days?

Mike,

We still need to get a website but I think we've purchased the domain name.

We're starting off small- with a book discussion of Pete Rollins book.

We're going to then segue into A.J. Jacobs' The Year of Living Biblically. Hope to drum up some additional interest through friends of friends and Craig's List.

We should have an art show later in the year "Fucked Up Ideas of God."-- a way to get people to think theologically. It's a bit subversive.

That's about all for now about VERVE.

Hey, MIke...I remember meeting you. Ah, if I were only as charismatic as Mr. Jones. Well, we'll just have to meet up again. I'm hanging out with more mainline emergents these days and loved finding this community!

Stay ornery...
