Charlie Rose, et al

I just finished watching the Thursday night edition of "Charlie Rose." For those who may not know him, his talk show is literate and his guests are truly interesting drawn from, generally, the serious pursuits of the arts, science, literature, politics, etc. and even, occasionally, religion.

Tonight's first topic was the judicial overturning of California's Propostion 8. All three guests were in favor of the ruling and welcomed it as another significant advance in the history…

It's great that you recognize that it's "the kind of work deacons were originally intended to do." Thankfully, our Bishop (Larry Provenzano) also recognizes that and is beginning to re-assign deacons in a more creative way that is more faithful to our ministry and charism. Keep the Diocese of Long Island in your prayers!

It's pretty "simple" actually. I administer the Diocesan Episcopal Charities Grant Program for Archdeaconries and Parishes. We have seed money grants available to start/expand ministries. We also provide training for grantees in seeking other sources of funding. I also work to assist parishes, deaneries, archdeaconries (or the Diocese) in discerning what the needs of the "community" are, and how we can respond. This also involves providing training for groups in discerning what gifts they bring to ministry. It's challenging, but energizing!
