A few things coming up at VTS in the next few months -

Convocation Oct 5-6 featuring Phyllis Tickle - https://www.vts.edu/podium/default.aspx?t=36644&rid=3161

Then Oct 22nd we are having a Fridays at the Seminary event on the emerging church. A group of students will be sharing some of their experiences and travels with emerging church communities. Our hope is that it is an introduction to emergence that gets beyond the stereotypes and assumptions and into the real values and challenges emergence presents to the church. See the VTS website for registration info.

Correct, the commencement address will by put on the website - live I believe.

Also we have Pete Rollins on Campus today, which was an awesome opportunity. He spoke for an hour in a forum with about 40 people including the Dean. Then he met in the Welcome Center for another hour and a half with about a dozen students who were able to ask some more in depth questions.

The basis of his talk was in intro to his upcoming book. You can see a clip that is very similar to his talk at VTS on his website http://peterrollins.net/blog/

The one online is from the Insurrection tour during his stop at Baylor (and being from that area of the country I was surprised Baylor let him on their campus because of how threatening his theology is to their context!). Great stuff there. I've been looking for someone who could give a more substantive theology out of an emergent perspective and Rollins surpassed all my expectations. So I highly recommend him to you. He can be jarring to many episcopalians and inherited church people, but his challenging thought is so refreshing.

Concerning things emergent, VTS has been pretty quiet until this school year. over the last three years there is an increasing number of students interested in reaching post-modern generations and looking at the emerging church for various models and conversation partners.

This year's commencement speaker will be Brian McLaren, which is quite exciting. There is also a reading group with CED credit that ten students are participating in. We went to the Diocese of Easton recently to hear Phyllis Tickle speak at their convention and are returning again to hear and meet Brian McLaren April 23 and 24th. As a part of this class we have nearly booked a date for Peter Rollins to join us on Campus. Amy Dyer and Dean Markham have been really supportive of this.

There is also an upcoming event for those of you in the DC area at Wesley Seminary April 30th - May 2nd

Our 2021 community is based in John's Gospel - Jesus says to his disciples in 20:21 - "as the father has sent me, so I am sending you."

We are sent to homes, piers, bars, rescue missions, habitat build sites, etc. to do the work of the church incarnate.

Monthly we gather to worship on a pier or in a home and engage in the Apostle's teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers.

So, what's the Emerging Buzz around VTS? I graduated in 2003 and serve a suburban parish in the Syracuse Ny area.

As a pretty standard upstate suburban parish, in some ways we couldn't be farther from the ultra cool things they're doing at COTA, Moot, etc., but we went to an Emerging Conference wiht Karen Ward and my parishioners left with the impression that we are emergent! (Which makes me smile on several levels -- like: Are you kidding me? and Maybe we're on to something!

We do contextual mission and experiment liturgically. (We're not out of the box when compared to emergent churches, but we're certainly branching out of our own comfort zone!)

We do a series of monthy community Eucharists -- totally inspired by my time at VTS, when we'd gather on a Wed. night to explore different forms of worship and to have an opportunity to enjoy God, worship, and one another. We even have a coffee hour after.

They've been really well received: Healing Service, Celtic, U2charist, Prayer & Praise, International, Mass on the Grass, etc. About half of the congregation is from our own St. Matthew's and the other half is from other local churches, the community, or friends of our folks. We're becoming a kind of "second spiritual home" for some.

So -- emerging (for us) inspiration from VTS....

I'd love to hear what you all are doing!

Carrie
