Here's the first bit to whet your appetite:

Well, we're in trouble now. U.S. bishops, not all of them but clearly a vocal few, have brought the church to the point of serious confusion. By denouncing Notre Dame for inviting President Obama to give the university's 2009 commencement address and, in the course of that ceremony, to receive the honorary degree awarded to eight U.S. presidents before him, the bishops are surely in an awkward position. To say the least.

The problem is that on July 10, Pope Benedict XVI will receive President Obama at the Vatican itself. That kind of reception is, of course, no small honor for anyone and surely a symbol of dialogue and listening at the highest level of Vatican diplomacy.

So will those same bishops denounce the Vatican, too, as they did Notre Dame? And if not, what is that saying?

It must be saying that to be in the presence of someone who does not agree with you, to engage in dialogue with someone who holds your values but seeks to achieve them differently, is not a moral misdemeanor.

Joan Chittister is a wonderful voice of integrity, humanity and humility...the finest example of Catholic thinking in an otherwise cloud of so-called Christian arrogance! In pontificating how others of good will and moral integrity "should" live, and by their rejection of others of different opinion, they lack both compassion and wisdom, further isolating themselves from other Christians and other churches which struggle to include and live by the best Christian intentions..It is time the churches, of whatever denomination came together in the name of a loving, all-including Christ! There are as many ways to be a Christ-ian as there are human beings; we are each one God's unique and special creation. No human can truly say how our Creator thinks or that any "church" is the sole "right way" I'm just an ordinary Episcopalian...not a theologian, but it seems to me that "Churches" must change, or die!
IMO, Sr Joan speaks with a prophetic voice.

I am of the opinion that we Christians spend entirely too much time looking for what is wrong with each other, each other's church and the church's theology. I am convinced it is why our churches become emptier and emptier. I would far rather see Christians celebrate what we have in common. Which far out numbers the ways in which we differ. We need to start looking for Jesus in each other. IMO
Right on!

I hope this thread produces a few more responses! Mine is not of any importance...there are others whose opinions I would very much like hearing! No doubt the same goes for you as well. Thanks for lighting the fire!
I am 100% in agreement with you, Danny. Thank you for reading and feeling it worth comment.
